In India, the adolescent population is about 200 million consisting about one fifth of the country’s total population. There are varied concerns that relate to adolescents that impact on their health and development. Sexual activity among adolescents and young people and the associated risks of pregnancy is growing in magnitude in many parts of the world. In recent years, especially in the second half of 1990s there has been an increasing concern and rapid increase in the intervention research on youth sexuality and sexual behaviour. Yet, with special reference to Indian context, comparatively less is know about the sexual behaviour of the general population and that of the young people in particular. In the absence of data there is limited understanding on young people’s sexual behaviour and its positive and negative outcomes. This paper is third in the series of working papers developed under theInformation Centre on young people’s issues.
